Below I share the pattern that I designed to make the cradle from the book. I followed the illustration as best as I could, to create as close of a replica as I could make.
This wonderful cradle does rock, and is balanced well so that it doesn’t topple to its side when a Hitty is resting in it.
Below is the pattern for the cradle. Click the image to view the full size photo. The pattern should be printed to fit a typical 8 by 10 sheet of paper in order to print it exactly to the proper scale.
You may make the cradle from balsa wood, basswood or thin hardwood. Your wood should be 1/4″ thick. The cradle created for this tutorial is made from red oak wood obtained at Home Depot.
First cut 2 side pieces, 2 rocker pieces, the bottom, baseboard and headboard.
Glue the side pieces to the bottom of the bed, and glue the headboard to the top of the bed. Gently adjust the sides to where they are square with the headboard, and let the glue dry completely before assembling the baseboard and rockers.
Next glue the baseboard on the bottom and let the glue dry completely before assembling the rockers.
Next, glue the rockers on the bottom of the cradle, centered and exactly 3/8″ from the edge of the cradle.
Let the glue dry and your cradle is now completed!
