Below are images of the bits I use when I am power carving a Hitty. I don’t know the proper names for some of the bits, so I took detailed photos so one can clearly see the shape and grit of the bits.
This is the bit I use the most. I use it to do most of my carving. It leaves a very rough finish, so I always leave enough wood to be sanded away using my barrel sanders, without making my limbs too tiny. I have found that if I carve too small with this bit, then once sanded smooth, the limbs are very petite and tiny.
This bit is more like a polishing stone. I use it to sand certain areas like the eyes, where the feet meet the lower legs and the elbows. It’s my second most used bit.
These are my small barrel sanders. I use the rough one to sand first, then the one with finer grit to do the final sanding. These two get my Hitty’s complexion to an almost smooth finish, where I can easily complete the final sanding by hand using 300 grit sandpaper.
I use larger barrel sanders on the body, to smooth the sides, chest, back and V-Joint. I also use these in order of rough grit first, then fine grit, to complete with hand sanding with 300 grit sandpaper.
I use this bit to carve my Hitty’s curls.
I use these two bits to separate the mouth, nose and chin areas from the rest of Hitty’s face.
Sometimes I like to put circles on the top of the curls to give a “sausage curl” look. I use this round bit to do that.
Following are the bits I use to shape the nose, mouth and chin. The top image is my rougher bits, the lower picture is my 600 grit bits that I use to smooth the wood after everything has been shaped as I like it.
I purchased both of these sets of bits on eBay from eBay seller HobbyToolSupply. Although he sells these bits at a very cheap rate, and offers free shipping, I will say the bits are wonderful for carving Hittys. I also love the fact that they fit my 1/8″ collet so there’s no need to change the collet when changing the smaller bits from the larger ones.
Search his store for 600 grit bits to find the 600 grit ones, they do a WONDERFUL job of sanding the small areas on Hitty’s face. I use them both for sanding with the dremel and handsanding in the areas that sandpaper is really to large for.
